The RAMP Lab is a new group at NJIT, and the people who join now will shape what it becomes. We are looking for curious students and researchers who enjoy building materials and testing them on hard separation problems.
We are seeking one Ph.D. student to join the lab in Spring 2027. You will work on stimuli-responsive membranes with switchable transport, on ion-selective membranes for critical mineral recovery, or on both. The position is fully funded, covering stipend and tuition.
Requirements: an M.S. in chemical engineering, materials science, chemistry or a related field, plus hands-on synthesis experience with polymers, 2D materials or framework compounds. This experience is required. Membrane fabrication or electrochemical characterization is a plus.
International applicants: TOEFL 79 (iBT), IELTS 6.5 or PTE 57 or higher. The GRE is required, with a minimum quantitative score of 158.
NJIT undergraduates can join one of three tracks: polymer and membrane synthesis; nanozyme and surface chemistry (MIL-101(Fe), MOPs, FTIR, UV–vis, SEM); or characterization and separation testing. Positions take 8 to 12 hours a week, scheduled around your classes, and training in lab safety, membrane fabrication, and data analysis is provided.
Each summer, we also host community college and high school students as research interns.
Funded postdoctoral openings will be posted here. We welcome inquiries from strong candidates, including those applying for independent fellowships with the RAMP Lab as host.
1. Email Dr. Ghalei at behnam.ghalei@njit.edu with the subject line "PhD Application – RAMP Lab". Undergraduates can use "Undergraduate Research – RAMP Lab".
2. Attach three documents: your CV, a brief research statement and unofficial transcripts.
3. Apply to NJIT. Ph.D. applicants also apply through NJIT Graduate Admissions and name Dr. Ghalei as a potential advisor.
Hands-on from day one. Cast thin-film and hollow-fiber membranes, synthesize nanozymes and run permeation, adsorption and catalytic tests on bench-scale setups.
Training that sticks. Structured training in lab safety, membrane fabrication and data analysis in Excel, Origin or Python.
Present your work. Students present at conferences such as the AIChE Annual Meeting and publish in leading journals.
